Background:
Cate Taylor’s research combines interests in several areas: gender, social inequality, social psychology, and stress response. She is especially interested in the growing area of sociology which seeks to understand the interaction between social structures and physiological processes – and how this interaction creates and maintains social structures. Her dissertation work concerned the workplace environments and stress response of women in male-dominated occupations and men in female-dominated occupations. While a Health and Society Scholar she aims to expand her research to consider the ways in which the relationship between social arrangements and biological processes relates to health outcomes. In the context of this broad agenda, her goal is to focus on how sociological gender scholarship can contribute to population health research. Most broadly, her work will focus on the ways in which gendered structures, interactions, and identities can be considered social determinants of health. Cate received a B.A. in economics from Smith College in 1995, an M.A. in Human Development from Cornell University in 2003, and a PhD in Sociology from Cornell University in 2010.
