Background:
jimi adams’s research addresses how a social network perspective alters the questions we ask as social scientists, what we subsequently find, and the implications of those changes. His current research focuses on the link between religion and infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS. His dissertation work, stemming from his involvement with two primary data collection projects in rural Malawi, explored the religious networks within which HIV-prevention strategies develop, and the impact of religious participation on risk network structure. Much of his interest focuses on improving the links between theoretical constructions, data collection strategies and empirical methodology – particularly through reintroducing relational thinking as a cornerstone of what it means to be a sociologist. While a Health & Society Scholar, he aims to continue this focus by extending his research on religion and HIV into several local New York communities (including, among others, involvement in a project with Chinese immigrant churches). With this time, he also plans to explore the importance of social networks in other non-HIV related health outcomes. jimi received his PhD in sociology from Ohio State University in 2007, and holds a B.A. from Virginia Tech.
