Background:
Michael Emch is a spatial epidemiologist/medical geographer specializing in spatial modeling techniques for infectious disease research. He is an Associate Professor of Geography at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. His research on the dynamics of infectious diseases has been published in Social Science and Medicine, the Lancet, Environment and Planning A, the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Health & Place, and the International Journal of Infectious Disease. Presently, he is also the Principal Investigator of a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and National Science Foundation funded project entitled “Geographical Analysis in Vaccine Trials: Spatial Confounders, Effect Modifiers, and Herd Immunity Measurement.” The study is developing a spatial analytical theory and methods for phase III vaccine trials. Michael earned his Ph.D. in Geography from Michigan State University, his M.A. in Geography at Miami University, and his B.A. in Biology from Alfred University.
