Background:
Jennifer Stuber received her Ph.D. at Yale University in the Department of Health Policy. Her dissertation quantified the effect of stigma along with state policies on participation in Medicaid and the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program. She also developed a more nuanced view of stigma and its determinants than has been used in previous studies. Prior to coming to Columbia, she was also engaged in research on neighborhood determinants of health and behavior and on discrimination and its association with poor health. As a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholar, Stuber is interested in raising the salience of stigma for population health. She plans to explore the ways in which normative environments, which are shaped by social factors including the media and social policy, contribute to the generation of stigma and discrimination. She is also interested in the relationship between stigma and discrimination and mental health outcomes and behaviors. Towards these ends, Stuber is in the process of completing a study on stigma in the context of the U.S. smoking epidemic based on primary data collection and secondary analysis of the CPS Tobacco Use Supplement. Stuber is also co-editing a Special Issue on Stigma, Discrimination, Prejudice and Health to which she is also a contributor.
