Background:
Steven Haas received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2004. He also holds M.S. degrees in Sociology (2000) and in Population Health (2002) from UW-Madison. His substantive interests lie at the intersection of social stratification, demography and public health with particular interest in the processes that produce health and socioeconomic inequalities over the life course. His dissertation located health inequalities within the larger process of social stratification by investigating the role of health selection in inter- and intra-generational transmission of socioeconomic position. Another area of work examines the effect of obesity on psychosocial well-being among adolescents and adults. As a Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society Scholar, he is investigating how early life circumstances alter the “quantum of aging” by analyzing the level and shape of latent growth curves in disability among the elderly. Upon completing the program Steven will accept a position as an assistant professor of population dynamics at Arizona State University.
