Background:
Tamar Mendelson received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Duke University in 2003. Her graduate research addressed various aspects of vulnerability to depression, including personality vulnerability factors and gender differences in vulnerability. She completed a clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) with a specialization in Public Service and Minority Mental Health. At UCSF, she collaborated on research regarding the feasibility and efficacy of a depression prevention program for low-income, pregnant Latinas. As a Robert Wood Johnson Scholar, her current projects include research on the joint effects of gender and socioeconomic factors on adolescents’ psychological distress, a meta-analysis on prevalence of depression among Latinos in the United States, and pilot laboratory work on affective and physiological effects of experimentally-induced social status. Her broad research interests include: (1) how socio-environmental factors interact with individual-level, psychological factors to predict depression onset, (2) how those multi-level processes contribute to gender disparities in rates of depression, and (3) development of multi-level depression prevention strategies. Following completion of her fellowship, Tamar will join the faculty in the Department of Mental Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.
