Background:
Annaliese Beery is a neurobiologist with a general interest in how experience and environment alter the biology and behavior of individuals. Her dissertation examines physiological mechanisms underlying the formation of social bonds in rodents, and how environmental factors contribute to variation in social behavior. Her work has particularly focused on the role of the hormone estrogen and the neuropeptide oxytocin in non-sexual social bonds between peers. As a Health and Society Scholar, Annaliese hopes to study the interface between experience and biology in humans and animal models, with a focus on the means by which short-term experiences can have long-term effects on health and physiology. She graduated from Williams College with a B.A. in Biology in 1997, and will receive her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from UC Berkeley in 2008.
