Background:
Jooyoung Lee is an urban ethnographer who studies race, crime, culture, and health. His first book, “Blowing Up: Rap Dreams in Los Angeles,” is under contract at the University of Chicago Press. In it, he examines the careers of aspiring rappers from South Central Los Angeles. In addition to showing how young black men organize their lives around “blowing up” in the music industry, he shows how the creative process transforms their social networks and worlds. As a Health & Society Scholar, Jooyoung started a new ethnography on gunshot victims. His study examines the different ways in which gunshot injuries transform the lives of victims. As a graduate student, Jooyoung received funding from the American Sociological Association´s Minority Fellowship Program, which was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Jooyoung received his Ph.D. in Sociology from UCLA in 2009, and received Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Political Science and Interdisciplinary Studies from UC Berkeley in 2003.
