Background:
Chyvette T. Williams holds an M.P.H. degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and she received her Ph.D. in Social and Behavioral Sciences in the Department of Health Policy and Management from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2004. For the past seven years, she has been involved in HIV and drug abuse research, both domestically and internationally. She was awarded funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to complete her dissertation, a multilevel study examining the effects of neighborhood disadvantage and personal networks on patterns of drug use among inner-city drug users. Dr. Williams’ primary research interests are in urban and minority health, social problems (e.g. substance use, poverty and crime), and in the effects of social networks on health risks. Further, Dr. Williams’ research focuses on health and health behaviors in an urban socio-spatial context. As a Health & Society Scholar, Dr. Williams is involved in research examining: 1) the effects of illicit drug markets (as a distinct aspect of neighborhood disadvantage) on individual and community health, 2) individual and contextual explanations of racial differences in interpersonal firearm violence, and 3) spatial aspects of illicit drug risks.
